Maisemore    Two juvenile BLACK TERNS at the River Leadon flood near Maisemore, a new species for here. Also ten Gadwalls, 16 Pintails, 14 Teal and a Kingfisher at the Over canal. (Andy Jayne).

WWT Slimbridge     From Middle Point birds included 15 probable Arctic Terns flew SW, eight Golden Plovers, a Sanderling, a Spotted Redshank, a juvenile Bar-tailed Godwit, two Great White Egrets and a Yellow-legged Gull. Seven Cattle Egrets and 44 Avocets on South Lake. (Slimbridge Sightings). From Kingfisher Hide two Hobbies, a Sparrowhawk, a Buzzard, a Marsh Harrier and the leucistic Marsh Harrier. (Warren Gill).

Cotswold Water Park West    At Shorncote Reedbed two Hobbies (at least 1 juvenile) hawking for dragonflies early afternoon. Other birds included a Red Kite, a Kestrel, a Snipe, two Common Sandpipers, 68 Lapwings, two Water Rails, two Green Woodpeckers, four Cetti’s Warblers and a Bullfinch. (Jon Mercer).

Saul Warth     This morning the leucistic Marsh Harrier hunting on and off for 35 minutes, 196+ House Martins and 34+ Swallows flew SW with a Hobby following, 26+ Meadow Pipits, four Pied Wagtails, 80 Shelducks, 16 Pintails flew N, 38 Mallards, 15 Curlews, a Snipe, four Little Egrets, a Buzzard and a Kestrel. Coombe Hill Meadows     Three Buzzards, two Kestrels, a Sparrowhawk, three Great White Egret, a Little Egret, a Cattle Egret, 20+ Wigeon, 16 Pintails, four Shovelers, ten Tufted Ducks, a female Pochard, an Egyptian Goose, a juvenile Ruff, three Snipe, two Jays, two Kingfishers and 20+ mixed House Martins and Swallows. Monday 23rd September 2024

WWT Slimbridge     From Middle Point birds included a Great White Egret, four Little Egrets, two juvenile Little Ringed Plovers and two Avocets. (Slimbridge Sightings).

Purton     This afternoon 17 Black-tailed Godwits and two Curlews on the river near the hulks. Also two Grey Herons and a Wigeon. (Mike Davis).

Winchcombe     A mixed flock of c500 birds from 8:30am for three hours in heavy rain. Mainly House Martins with many juveniles, a few Sand Martins and Swallows sitting on telegraph wires and some clinging to the walls of a house. (Peter Rodgers).

Sunday 22nd September 2024

Frampton     At Court Lake the OSPREY seen briefly at 8:15am but disappeared into a tree out of sight. (Mike Davis). Later a Cattle Egret, an OSPREY, an adult Yellow-legged Gull, a Water Rail calling, 12 Wigeon, 19 Shovelers, 11 Tufted Ducks, 18 Gadwalls, ten Mallards, 62 Coots, 32 Moorhens, 60 Mute Swans, four Cetti’s Warblers, 16 Chiffchaffs, four Bullfinches, four Treecreepers and two Tawny Owls. Saul Warth     At lunchtime today a Hobby, an immature male Marsh Harrier, 60 Curlews, an Avocet, two Common Sandpipers, two Ruff, three Stonechats and two Whinchats. (Gordon Hodgson).

Epney     A Grey Plover flew upstream on the tide this morning. Also two Common Sandpipers, a Greenshank and a Curlew. (Jeremy Squire).

Forest of Dean     At 9:40am the Lydbrook valley 50+ House Martins feeding along the valley for 30 minutes. (Chris Sullivan).

Witcombe Reservoirs     A Spotted Flycatcher this evening. (Jeremy Squire).

Elmore Court     In the rewilding area late morning 3+ Whinchats with 5+ Stonechats N of the scrape, also 10+ Reed Buntings, eight Meadow Pipits, four Skylarks, a Green Sandpiper, four Teal, a Little Egret, two Ravens and eight Swallows. (Steve Pullen).

Longney Crib     Mid afternoon a Great White Egret, a Little Egret, 27 Lapwings, two Ravens, 13 Mallards, a Cormorant, a Grey Heron, 100 Black-headed Gulls, 45 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, four Herring Gulls and two House Martins. (John Fletcher).

WWT Slimbridge     From Zeiss hide the juvenile PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 17 Ruff, three Great White Egrets and a Cattle Egret. (Slimbridge Sightings). Later six Cattle Egrets on South Lake. (Mike Davis). Thursday 19th September 2024

Shortwood     An OSPREY being mobbed by four Red Kites and several Buzzards over the house at 2:35pm. It headed NW over Forest Green Rovers stadium towards Woodchester Park. (Jon Haw).

Frampton     At 1:30pm an OSPREY glided slowly N over the house towards Saul. (Gordon Hodgson). At Court Lake an OSPREY seen four times in flight, but distant. Also two Hobbies, a Peregrine and a Sparrowhawk. (John Fletcher). A GLOSSY IBIS flew over the sailing lake, two Grey Wagtails, 21 Cormorants, four Little Egrets and two Treecreepers. (Nick Goatman). WWT Slimbridge    A GLOSSY IBIS flew over at 7:40am heading towards South Lake. (Slimbridge Sightings). Seven Greenshanks, three Green Sandpipers, four Snipe and a juvenile Water Rail on the Rushy. Lydney to Aylburton Warth     Migrants flying NE into the wind, 315 Swallows, 161 Meadow Pipits and eight Grey Wagtails. Also 30 Teal, a Ringed Plover, a Snipe, a Greenshank, a Great White Egret, four Little Egrets, two Whinchats, three Stonechats, three Wheatears, a Yellow Wagtail and 100 Linnets today. (Andy Jayne).

Gloucester     Five Stonechats by the first tall pylon along the Severn Way past the Lower Parting double gate, two females by the second tall pylon and a male by the ‘Sheepdown’ (old tip area). A female Kestrel hunting over the area. Two juvenile male Sparrowhawks chasing each other around the tipping area. (Gordon Avery).

Stinchcombe Hill     This morning a juvenile Wheatear, c60 Swallows feeding over the woodland edge, 15 Meadow Pipits and c80 Goldfinches. (James Robinson).

Tuesday 17th September 2024

WWT Slimbridge     A WHITE-TAILED EAGLE resting on the Severn off of the reserve at 7:40am but pushed off to Purton when the tidal wave passed. It then rested in Oaks viewable from Zeiss hide and Estuary Tower. It flew south at 11:15am and was lost to view over Sharpness at 11:30am. (Martin McGill). It was a tagged Isle of Wight bird and apparently spent the evening in the estuary according to its satellite tag. It is 22 months old and was released in 2022. (Info – Ian Hull). The juvenile PECTORAL SANDPIPER from Zeiss hide early then relocated to South Lake for a while. A BITTERN flew over the Decoy towards Long Ground at 12:45pm. (Slimbridge Sightings). A BITTERN from Zeiss hide at 12:20pm. (Les Ditchburn). A Wheatear along the Summer Walkway. (Duncan Dine). From Willow Hide a hunting female Sparrowhawk. From the Rushy, a Snipe and several Greenshanks. A Great White Egret on the Bottom New Piece. On the Top New Piece from Zeiss hide late afternoon three Marsh Harriers seen together hunting and on a bird carcase, and two adult Common Cranes with a juvenile. Frampton pools     An OSPREY still, a Hobby, the adult Yellow-legged Gull, six Little Egrets, 15 Swallows, three Sand Martins, eight House Martins, three Mistle Thrushes, 15 Gadwalls and a Willow Warbler today. (Nick Goatman).

Cleeve Hill     In the east section of the Common this afternoon a pair of Kestrels, a family of Stonechats and 70 Goldfinches. Also some Red Admiral migration. (Keith White).

Aylburton Common     A Hobby over the garden attempting to catch hirundines at 5pm today. (Martin Vaisey).

WWT Slimbridge     The PECTORAL SANDPIPER again today mainly from Zeiss hide but with a short visit to South Lake at lunchtime. The juvenile leucistic Marsh Harrier hunting over the Bottom New Piece today. (Slimbridge Sightings/Andy Jordan/Jeremy Holland).

Saul Warth     At high tide early morning seven Grey Herons, two Little Egrets, 60 Curlews, two Greenshanks, 21 Shelducks, two Buzzards, two Kestrels, a Whinchat, 20+ Goldfinches, a male Blackcap, five Chiffchaffs, two Reed Buntings, a Skylark, a Yellow Wagtail, a Grey Wagtail and 10+ Pied Wagtails. Gloucester     A Spotted Flycatcher at Plock Court Wildlife area today. Also a Chiffchaff a Buzzard and a Moorhen. (Jim Northcott).

Alvington    Two Red Kites and a Hobby over Clanna Country Park today. (Paul Woolams).

Ashleworth Ham     A ringing session today caught 72 birds including five Blackcaps, ten Chiffchaff, 13 Long-tailed Tits, 27 Goldfinches, two Linnets, a Bullfinch and seven Reed Buntings. On the reserve ten Canada Geese, two Sparrowhawks, 30 Meadow Pipits and two Ravens. (Mervyn Greening/Stuart Brown/Mike Smart).

WWT Slimbridge     A PECTORAL SANDPIPER on the Top New Piece from Zeiss hide from 11:50am-3:50pm at least. (David Creber/John Budd/Martin McGill). Also a Green Sandpiper and c30 Ruffs. Three Garganeys, a Spotted Redshank, two Snipe and a Kingfisher on the Rushy. At least two White Wagtails with 8+ Pied Wagtails on the restaurant roof. (MK). At 3:50pm a Cattle Egret from Zeiss hide and a Hobby hunting dragonflies low over the central path in the grounds. (Tim McGrath).
