Frampton pools    This morning 200+Sand Martins, 20+ Swifts, a Hobby, 109 Barnacle Geese, 56 Greylags, two Canada Geese, the Ross’s Goose, 82 Mute Swans, two pairs of Great Crested Grebes both with three young, two Oystercatchers, four Common Terns, four Little Egrets and two Kingfishers. Saturday 6th July 2024

Frampton     At Splatt Bridge this morning, two Common Sandpipers on the canal, five Bar-tailed Godwits flew N, a Black-tailed Godwit flew high S, 13 Curlews, 30+ Avocets over the estuary, a male Yellow Wagtail, four young Black-headed Gulls and a Common Tern flew S. (Gordon Hodgson). On Court Lake the Ross’s Goose, 55 Greylags, 92 Barnacle Geese, a Canada Goose, 60 Mute Swans, a Common Tern and 25+ Swifts. (MK).

Gloucester    At 5:20pm a Red Kite drifted low across the Randwick Park area of Tuffley. (Ian Elphick).

Winchcombe     This afternoon a male Sparrowhawk on the lawn with a Great Spotted Woodpecker in its talons, and then flew off with it. (Andrew & Gill Worthington).

Brockhampton     This evening a Barn Owl flying low over fields, a Buzzard, two Yellowhammers, two Goldfinches, Chiffchaffs singing and a House Martin. (Andrew & Gill Worthington).

WWT Slimbridge     The male WHITE-SPOTTED BLUETHROAT still at Middle Point today showing almost continuously 11am-1pm. Also a Red kite. (Tim Jukes/Oliver Paisey). A Common Sandpiper on the Rushy and six Green Sandpipers on the Tack Piece. (Dot Jones). On South Lake from Hogarth hide the Spotted Redshank. Also on South Lake an Egyptian Goose with five goslings and a Black Swan. (Ian Hull).

Gloucester    Between Longford and Abbots Lodge this afternoon three Little Owls, three Sand Martins, 40+ House Martins, a male Redstart, four Yellow Wagtails and two Reed Buntings. (Andy Jayne).

Forest of Dean     A Spotted Flycatcher in Bearfoot Wood, high on May Hill today. (Rob Guest).

Saul Warth     This afternoon two Avocets, 35 Curlews, six Oystercatchers, two Lapwings, a Little Egret, 45+ Shelducks including 15 ducklings, 16 Long-tailed Tits, a Swift, a Swallow, four Whitethroats, a male Blackcap and a Chiffchaff. Also a Roebuck, the first Brown Hawker and 2+ male Emperors. (MK).

Whitminster     A Red Kite over the Forge at 12:36pm. (MK).

Epney     At 3:45pm a Common Sandpiper, 15+ Sand Martins and an adult Great Black-backed Gull with commoner gull species. (MK).

Saul Warth     At high tide at 6:30am a Great White Egret, two Little Egrets, three Grey Herons, two Great Crested Grebes on the river, 50+ Shelducks including 20 ducklings, a Common Tern and another on the canal, 130+ Avocets, 105+ Curlews, three Lapwings, eight Oystercatchers and a Marsh Harrier. Nailsworth     A very early male MERLIN, chasing a small bird at Barton End this afternoon. Also, two Red Kites, a Buzzard and a Kestrel there. A small southerly movement of 60+ Swifts this morning over Windsoredge. (Terry Grant).

Stonehouse     In the Bond’s Mill area this afternoon a Peregrine hunting high around the mill. Also a Buzzard, a Grey Heron, a Kingfisher, a Chiffchaff and a Kestrel. (Paul Sutton).

WWT Slimbridge    This morning the Ross’s Goose on the Tack Piece, which has now been present in the Frampton/Slimbridge area for 3 years, six Little Ringed Plovers, 70+ Black-tailed Godwits, four Green Sandpipers, an Egyptian Goose with six goslings and a pair of Common Cranes with two juveniles (view from Hogarth hide) on South Lake. (MK/Magnus Carter). This afternoon the summer-plumaged Spotted Redshank and four Ruff (2 white and 2 black in partial summer plumage) from Zeiss hide this afternoon. (Magnus Carter). Frampton pools     At Court Lake a Spotted Flycatcher with young, nine Little Egrets, 16 Coots, 13 Moorhens and 12 young, a Great Crested Grebe and three young, 89 Mute Swans and six cygnets, 55 Barnacle Geese and six goslings and 52 Greylags and nine goslings. (Nick Goatman).

Whitminster     A Red Kite following a tractor in the field below Highfields garden centre at 12:15pm. (MK). Still present at 4:50pm. (Terry Stevenson).

Over     A Red Kite over the A40 at Over Farm at 7:30am today. (Martin Drew).

Hucclecote    This morning in the garden an adult female Mallard with a juvenile male. Yesterday three Mallards, an adult female and a juvenile male and female, a juvenile Goldfinch on a seed feeder and two Herring Gulls chased off the pigeons and ducks. (Harold Smith).

Frampton     A male Redstart in the bushes along the sea wall viewed from the towpath this morning. (Terry Grant).

Forest of Dean      At Nagshead from Campbell hide at midday a Hawfinch, a worn Great Tit and a pair each of Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Robin and Siskin. Also a Fallow doe with three fawns. Mid-afternoon a Spotted Flycatcher from the Short Trail. At Cannop Stoneworks from 4:30pm 3+ Grey Wagtails on and around the outfall including 1+ juvenile being fed by an adult. On the stoneworks hanging feeders a Marsh Tit, 2+ Great Tits, a Nuthatch, a pair of Chaffinches, 3+ Goldfinches and a male Siskin; also a Swallow briefly on the ground beneath. (Andy & Sue Gibbons).

Rodley     A Little Owl nest with juveniles showing and 5 metres away a Kestrel nest also with juveniles. (Rachel Thomas).

Coombe Hill Meadows     This afternoon 20+ Lapwings and six Mistle Thrushes on the same recently ploughed field. (Paul Clark). This evening ten Mute Swans, a Canada Goose, a female Shelduck, 60 Mallards, a Great White Egret, a Grey Heron, a Water Rail singing in the Short Pool, two Oystercatchers, 49 Lapwings (31 adults & 18 flying juveniles), two Curlews, an adult Redshank, 20+ Swifts, two Yellow Wagtails, ten Mistle Thrushes, and song from Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler and Blackcap. Also a roost of at least 1000 corvids in the Long Pool, the vast majority Jackdaws, and c50 each Carrion Crows and Rooks. (Mike Smart).

Gloucester    This morning a Red Kite at 9am, circling above the old gas works on the corner of Myers Road and Horton Road. (Julia Adamson).

WWT Slimbridge    A GLOSSY IBIS flew over the car park heading N at 8am. (David Creber). The summer-plumaged Spotted Redshank still on South Lake. Cleeve Hill     Early morning a Grasshopper Warbler reeling, two singing Corn Buntings, a Tree Pipit, two pairs of Stonechats, a Willow Warbler, Yellowhammers, Linnets, Skylarks, Meadow Pipits and two Kestrels. (Tom Mabbett).

Elmore Court     At the rewilding area late morning viewed from Broadmeadow Bank, a male Kestrel caught a mouse near the scrape, three Buzzards, four Whitethroats, two Linnets, six Skylarks, a Sedge Warbler, eight Stock Doves and 40+ Swifts hawking high over the meadows. (Steve Pullen).

Stroud     At Fromebanks three Kingfishers, 2+ Grey Wagtails and a Dipper this morning on the River Frome. (Mike Davis).

Cam     A Little Owl early morning and again late afternoon in Woodend Lane. (Brian Kings).

Cotswolds     At Roel Hill Farm four Corn Buntings, two Yellowhammers, a Linnet, a Buzzard and a Stoat. At Guiting Power a family party of Great Spotted Woodpeckers, two Swifts, ten House Martins, two Nuthatches and a Raven. At Hawling Lodge, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, two Jays and a family party of Mistle Thrushes. In the general area a pair of Kestrels repeatedly bringing food to three juveniles and two Buzzards begging on a nest. (Steve Brown).

Highnam    Recent garden birds included three Greenfinches, a Nuthatch, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, six Goldfinches, a Blackcap, a Coal Tit, three Chaffinches, two Ravens, three Buzzards and a Red Kite over. (Clare McLeod).

WWT Slimbridge     The male WHITE-SPOTTED BLUETHROAT still at Middle Point today ranging as far as the Dumbles cross fence. (Jeanne Vitkovskis).

Hasfield Ham     This morning a reeling Grasshopper Warbler near to where the path forks. A QUAIL called once. Also heard a Yellow Wagtail, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and two Sedge Warblers and at least 20 Whitethroat, many juveniles. (David Lawrence).

Sherborne     A QUAIL calling, at noon just off the A40 at Sherborne. (Duncan Dine).

Stinchcombe     On the golf course two Spotted Flycatchers below the car park on the south side of the hill this afternoon. (Brian Kings).

Forest of Dean     A Garden Warbler singing strongly at the top of May Hill this morning. (Rob & Gillian Guest).

Winchcombe     Male and female Siskins, a male Great Spotted Woodpecker, at least four Long-tailed Tits, two Goldfinches, 5+ Swifts circling overhead and a Sparrowhawk low over the garden. (Gill Worthington).

Aylburton/Plusterwine/Alvington     Birds this morning included seven Swallows, 12 Curlews, two Oystercatchers, seven Shelducks, two Reed Warblers, three Blackcaps (2m, 1f), three Linnets, eight Swifts, an immature Buzzard, a Kestrel, 4+ Skylarks, a Reed Bunting, nine Goldfinches, two Moorhens, a Whitethroat and a Chiffchaff heard. WWT Slimbridge     The male WHITE-SPOTTED BLUETHROAT singing at Middle Point again today. (Oliver Paisey). An adult summer islandica race Black-tailed Godwit on South Lake this morning. (Duncan Dine). The summer-plumaged Spotted Redshank showing well on South Lake again today. (Slimbridge Sightings).

Saul Warth     At high tide early afternoon 50+ Avocets, 40+ Curlews, two Lapwings, a Redshank, two Dunlins, 100+ Shelducks, seven Oystercatchers, six Grey Herons, a Little Egret and a Mandarin flew S down the canal. (MK).

Frampton     A Kittiwake through the sailing lake heading towards the river at lunchtime. Also a Great White Egret, a Kingfisher, a Buzzard, a Great Crested Grebe with young, a Hobby, 80+ Swifts, 20+ Sand Martins, 20+ House Martins, 10+ Swallows and five Common Terns.  (Nick Goatman). Forest of Dean     From Yew Tree Brake Inclosure to Staple Edge Wood, include three Buzzards, two Swifts, two Garden Warblers, two Firecrests, eight Spotted Flycatchers, a pair of Stonechats, a Grey Wagtail, eight Tree Pipits, five Crossbills and ten Siskins. (Andy Jayne).
