Crickley Hill     This afternoon a family party of Spotted Flycatchers, a Kestrel calling and a Green Woodpecker. (Paul Masters).

Ashleworth Ham     The ringed Great White Egret (AAR) showed well at today from the roadside screen below the hide. (Chris & Phil Andrews). Also today two Greylags, three Mallards, six Teal, a Grey Heron and a Buzzard. (Mike Smart).

Coombe Hill Meadows     14 Mute Swans, five Canada Geese, a Teal, 15 Mallards, a Great White Egret (unringed), a Grey Heron, two Moorhens with two chicks, three Lapwings, two Common Terns, a Kingfisher, a Cetti’s Warbler singing, a Sedge Warbler, two singing Reed Warblers and a singing Blackcap. Walmore Common     A least six Whinchats this morning. (Steve Rickard).

WWT Slimbridge     This morning around the grounds a Great White Egret, seven Common Cranes, including two pairs each with a juvenile. At least 14 Little Egrets on the reserve and more on the river, 10+ Grey Herons, Reed Warblers, one with a juvenile, a juvenile Kingfisher, three Green Sandpipers, three Little Ringed Plovers, c50 Black-tailed Godwits from the Hogarth hide, a Kingfisher taking food to the nest bank at Kingfisher hide and a Little Grebe feeding a youngster. Also Common Darters, Emperors and Black-tailed Skimmers. (Paul Sutton). On South Lake 253 Black-tailed Godwit, a Spotted Redshank, three Ruff, six Redshanks, six Green Sandpipers and an Avocet. (Ian Hull). At Middle Point a brief Grasshopper Warbler reeling near the cross fence. (Tim Jukes).

Thursday 18th July 2024

Coombe Hill Meadows     Two Common Terns, an unringed Great White Egret, a Little Egret,  a Common Sandpiper and a juvenile Little Ringed Plover this morning. (Les Ditchburn).

Nailsworth     At least 1200 Swifts flew S and SSW down the Nailsworth Valley along with six early departure Swallow. Also seen a pair of food carrying Sparrowhawks, a Kestrel, a Red Kite and c12 Buzzards. (Terry Grant).

Painswick    2410 Swifts SW over the house between 1pm and 6pm today. Also a Hobby  flew S at 1:42pm. (John Fleming).

Winchcombe     This evening, 8+ Long-tailed Tits and 29 Swifts wheeling over the garden. (Andrew Worthington).

Ashleworth Ham     A ringing session this morning caught 41 birds including three Redstarts, two Sedge Warblers, ten Whitethroats, three Lesser Whitethroats, four Blackcaps, a Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, two juvenile Kingfishers, a Linnet and five Reed Buntings. Forest of Dean    Four Peregrines over Coleford this morning, two adults and two juveniles. (Geoff Fawcett).

Horsley    Three Red Kites and two Buzzards over where silaging is in progress near Horsley tip. (Tanya Allen).

Cheltenham     A probable Osprey, very high, flew S over Hatherley at 1:30pm today. (Dave Tomlin & Mary Harris).

Walmore Common     This evening nine Whinchats, at least three Stonechats and two Yellow Wagtails. (Andy Jayne).

Tresham     A Spotted Flycatcher, a Little Owl, an abundance of Skylarks, a few Corn Buntings and 8+ Swallows over the village. (Geoff Moyser).

Forest of Dean     Two Peregrines over Coleford, presumably an adult with a noisy youngster in pursuit. Three Common Sandpipers on the River Wye at Lydbrook. (Geoff Fawcett). A juvenile Buzzard mewling this afternoon SW of the Lydbrook valley. c20 Swifts circling this evening high above Forge Hill, Lydbrook. Also a Gatekeeper butterfly there. (Chris Sullivan).

WWT Slimbridge    From Kingfisher hide the pair of Kingfishers were busy taking fish to the nest hole. From the start of the Kingfisher Walkway a Treecreeper. From Robbie Garnett hide four juvenile Little Ringed Plovers. A Bittern was reported from Kingfisher hide. (Geoff Bryant). A Goshawk flew over South Lake at 12:20pm. (Warren Gill).

Stonehouse     Along the canal from Bridgend to Bond’s Mill a Migrant Hawker, lots of Emperors and Black-tailed Skimmers. A Sedge warbler at Hoffmann’s Dam and a Red Kite over Nutshell bridge for the 2nd day running. Also ten Swifts, 15 House Martins and eight Swallows together over the field below St Cyr’s church and all coming in to drink on the canal. (Paul Sutton). A Hobby through Stonehouse at 4pm this afternoon chased by Swifts. (Jon Dexter).

Frampton    Around the pools two Hobbies, a Spotted Flycatcher, three Common Sandpipers, three Grey Herons, four Little Egrets, three Oystercatchers, 16 Tufted Ducks, five Cormorants, 109 Barnacle Geese, 23 Greylags, 88 Mute Swans, three Canada Geese, a Kingfisher, four Common Terns and 14 Pied Wagtails. (Nick Goatman). From Splatt Bridge this morning a Kingfisher, a Grey Wagtail, a Grey Heron and eight Mute Swans (2 ads, 6 juvs) on the canal. Around the flashes lots of Reed Warblers and Reed Buntings, mainly juveniles, also a juvenile Kestrel and two Little Egrets and two Treecreepers and eight Greenfinches by the church. (Steve Pullen).

WWT Slimbridge     Up to six Green Sandpipers, five Ruff and a distant adult WOOD SANDPIPER on the Tack Piece this afternoon. (Terry Stevenson). On the Rushy at lunchtime birds included two Ruff, two Redshanks, a Spotted Redshank, a Common Sandpiper and a female Marsh Harrier. (Tim McGrath). On South Lake this morning birds included 186 Black-tailed Godwits, a Common Sandpiper, a Green Sandpiper, 15 Ruff, 20+ Redshanks, a pair of Common Cranes with two young, a Black Swan and a Gadwall family of eight ducklings. Gloucester    Around Sandhurst today a Shoveler, 18 Swifts, two recently fledged Sparrowhawks, a Red Kite, a Little Owl, three Kingfishers, two Green Woodpeckers, a Raven, a Lesser Whitethroat, two Treecreepers, two Spotted Flycatchers, a male Redstart, a Yellowhammer and two Reed Buntings. Standish     A family of Spotted Flycatchers in a garden this morning. (Roy Widgery).

Saul Warth     This afternoon 115 Curlews, three Oystercatchers, two Little Egrets, a Kestrel, a Raven heard, a Skylark, three Blackcaps singing, a Chiffchaff and 50+ Linnets on stubble across the canal from Saul Lodge. One each of Red Admiral and Gatekeeper today the only butterflies. (MK). On the tideline at Hock Cliff, 99 Avocets. (Les Ditchburn).

Ashleworth Ham     This afternoon birds included a Great White Egret, ring number AAR (this bird was at Ashleworth/CHM April to June 2022), four Mallards, two Greylags, two Grey Herons, a Buzzard and two Swallows. (John Fletcher).

Nailsworth     A trickle of Swifts flying SW and S all day, with 170+ between 8:30am and 12:20pm. Also two Red Kites circling over the valley, and an adult Yellow-legged Gull briefly in a field at Windsoredge. (Terry Grant). During a bat survey last night a Little Owl calling, along the cycle track at Watledge at 10pm. A juvenile Tawny Owl calling in Norton Wood, Windsoredge at 10:55pm. (David Bullock). Coombe Hill Meadows     Birds today included two Great Black-backed Gulls, two Great White Egrets, three Little Egrets, three Grey Herons, a Cormorant, Lapwings, a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, Sedge Warbler and Reed Warbler, Coot, Moorhen, Mute Swan, Mallard, Chiffchaff, Bullfinch, Greenfinch and Mistle Thrush. Bisley     This afternoon two Yellowhammers, four Linnets, two House Martins, two Stock Doves and 50+ mixed Rooks and Crows. (John Fletcher).

Painswick Beacon     3310 Swifts flew SW between 6am and 11am this morning. Also 12 Crossbills, four Swallows and two Sand Martins over and three Buzzards, three Ravens and a Red Kite circling around. (John Fleming).

Walmore Common     A male and a juvenile Stonechat, plenty of Reed buntings and Sedge Warblers, Grey Herons, a Kestrel and a Fox. (Rachel Thomas).

Breadstone     A family of four Spotted Flycatchers in the woods this morning. (Brian Kings).

Berkeley shore     This evening at Severn House Farm, a Common Sandpiper by the pill.(Brian Kings).

Halmore area     Two Goshawks, two Buzzards, a female Sparrowhawk, three Ravens, four Spotted Flycatchers, three Swifts, two Swallows, two Goldcrests, a Willow Warbler and several Chiffchaffs. Also a Purple Hairstreak, a Comma and a male Brimstone. (Chris Newton).

Frampton pools     Four Common Terns, a Spotted Flycatcher family, two Hobbies, three Whimbrels over, a Swift, 20+ Sand Martins, four Swallows, six House Martins, an adult Yellow-legged Gull, a Kingfisher, 87 Barnacle Geese, 40 Greylags, the Ross’s Goose, 87 Mute Swans, 30 Coots and 16 Moorhens today. Huntley     A Hobby over this morning chasing House Martins for 10 minutes from 10:30am then returned again at 11am before heading W. (Derek Summers).

WWT Slimbridge    At Middle Point a brief view of the male WHITE-SPOTTED BLUETHROAT, a Hobby, a Sparrowhawk and 40+ Curlews. 10+ Green Sandpipers, two Common Sandpipers, 5+ Ruff, a Spotted Redshank, 200+ Black-tailed Godwits, a Little Grebe and a Kingfisher on South Lake. (Paul Clark).

Saul Warth     High tide at midday 102+ Curlews, 100+ Avocets, nine Black-tailed Godwits, ten Oystercatchers, three Redshanks, a Lapwing, 80+ Shelducks, two adult Common Gulls, a Sparrowhawk, a Kestrel, two Lesser Whitethroats and three Chiffchaffs. (MK).

Leckhampton, Pilley Bridge     Near to the junction of Leckhampton Road and Moorend Road a Red Kite, a Swift, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Green Woodpecker and Coal Tits heard. (Steve Brown).

Aylburton Common     A Dipper outside the house at 5:15am. (Martin Vaisey).

Chedworth    60+ juvenile House Martins on wires at Stowell Mill today. (Harvey Sherwood).

Coombe Hill Meadows     This evening 13 Mute Swans, a Canada Goose, five Teal, 60 Mallards, two Great White Egrets, two Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, a Water Rail calling, six Coots and several full grown chicks, a pair of Moorhens on the canal with chicks, three Little Ringed Plovers, 18 Lapwings, two Green Sandpipers, a Redshank, 20 Swallows and ten House Martins, still two or three each of Sedge and Reed Warblers singing. Massive corvid roost in Long Pool, many hundreds of birds, mainly Jackdaws and some Carrion Crows and Rooks. (Mike Smart).
