Quedgeley    At Elmore Lane West near Dimore Brook, two singing male Yellowhammers, also at Sellers bridge a Common Tern passed by low over the canal at c3pm, diving occasionally heading toward Gloucester. (Steve Pullen).

Ashleworth & Hasfield Ham     A ringing session today caught 106 birds including three Redstarts, a Grasshopper Warbler, c8 Sedge Warblers, c15 Whitethroats and a Lesser Whitethroat. (Mike Smart/Mervyn Greening).

Sapperton     A Monarch butterfly of unknown origin at Daneway Banks GWT reserve at SO937034 today. (Paul Rowe).

Leighterton area    At least four QUAIL heard calling from three separate locations including ST831906. Also a Corn Bunting this morning. (Paul Rich).

Saturday 24th June 2017

Frampton     A Cuckoo calling at Splatt Bridge today. Also from Splatt Bridge to Ryalls Lane 6+ Swallows, 6+ House Martins, two Skylarks, a Sand Martin, a Reed Bunting, a Common Tern, a Stock Dove, three Blackcaps, two Chiffchaffs, a Sedge Warbler, a Bullfinch, a Great Crested Grebe, three Swifts, a Cormorant and a Buzzard. Berkeley shore     21 Little Egrets and a Common Sandpiper today. (Paul Taylor).

Twyning     At Upham Meadow a Red Kite soaring, at least six Curlews, 1+ Reed Warblers singing along the Avon, a Sedge Warbler still singing and at least five Reed Buntings singing. (Mike Smart).

Longlevens     A Red Kite flying over Longlevens at 1:30pm towards the Walls roundabout. (Barbara White).

Moreton-in-Marsh     A Red Kite over the Fire Training Centre Training Ground at 8pm. (Brett Lomax).

Symonds Yat     From Yat Rock viewpoint today the Peregrines and their juveniles, two Buzzards, a Kestrel, Swallows, Swifts, Sand and House Martins, a Song Thrush, a Chiffchaff, a family of Long-tailed Tits, Stock Doves, a Green Woodpecker, and a Great Spotted Woodpecker. Other sightings included a Rose Chafer, Hummingbird Hawkmoths, a Longhorn Beetle, a Bank Vole, a Wood Mouse, Painted Lady, Red Admiral, Comma, Meadow Brown, Ringlet and Holly Blue butterflies. WWT Slimbridge     On the Rushy four Lapwings, four Green Sandpipers, seven Avocets, four Oystercatchers, 123 Black-tailed Godwits, ten Pied Wagtails and 24 Shelducks. Along the Holden Walkway and Summer Walkway, 1+ Kingfisher, a Little Egret, two Reed Warblers, a Chiffchaff, four Green Sandpipers, three Lapwings,  four Avocets, a Redshank, four Lapwings, two Skylarks, six Pied Wagtails, four Swifts, five Swallows, a Sedge Warbler, 60+ Shelducks, two Meadow Pipits, two Oystercatcher, two Cormorants, ten Curlews and a House Martin. On South Lake, 25 Redshanks, 69+ Avocets, 80+ Black-tailed Godwits, five Lapwings, three Oystercatchers, a Shoveler, two Cormorants, a Great Crested Grebe and a Buzzard. From Zeiss and Kingfisher hide walkway, a Sedge Warbler, two Reed Buntings, two Common Cranes, a Reed Warbler, 14 Shelducks, 17 Avocets, 12 Lapwings, a Grey Heron, a Cetti’s Warbler, three Blackcaps, 6+ Swifts, 6+ House Martins, a Swallow, three Skylarks, ten Redshanks, a Shoveler and an Oystercatcher. Forest of Dean     At Nagshead Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps, Willow Warblers and families of Redstarts, Goldfinches and Grey Wagtails. Other sightings included an Emperor Dragonfly, a Broad-bodied Chaser, Emerald, Common Blue, Azure and Large Red Damselflies, Meadow Brown, Ringlet and Red Admiral butterflies and a Longhorn Beetle. Symonds Yat     From Yat Rock the Peregrines with their juveniles, two Buzzards, Ravens, Jays, Swifts, Swallows and House Martins. Other sightings included a pair of White-legged Damselflies, Hummingbird Hawkmoths, a Green Orb Spider, Speckled Wood and Red Admiral butterflies. Longlevens     A Red Kite over at 4:40pm today. (Dave Stone).

Kingscote     A Barn Owl at 9:45pm near Newington Barn flew across from fields to the copse behind the Barn, over the car. (Paul Sutton).

Edge     Four Skylarks, three Pied Wagtails, a Yellowhammer, three Whitethroats, two Buzzards, two Swallows, three Chiffchaffs, eight Swifts, a Nuthatch, five Bullfinches and a Green Woodpecker. (Mark Grieve).

Daneway Banks     A Large Blue Butterfly, a Buzzard, two Chiffchaffs, six Swifts, two Blackcaps, a Nuthatch and a Stock Dove. (Mark Grieve).

Wednesday 21st June 2017

Frampton     A Red Kite at the A38 Frampton turning at 11:23am today. (Paul Sutton).

Berkeley     Five Red Kites over Woodlands Farm Bungalow, Clapton at 1:30pm. All quite low, four went W towards the power station, and one circled high until out of sight. (Paul Sutton).

Gloucester     A Little Egret at 11:30am at Saintbridge Pond, Abbeydale, present for a couple of weeks. There were two, but only one seen over the last week. (Lorraine Besent).

Hardwicke     Adjacent to the Garden Centre a male Bullfinch with two juveniles, also 12-14 Marbled White butterflies in the roadside vegetation. Near Quadrant Way a Snipe flushed from the brambles adjacent to Shorn brook. (Michael Cook).

Ashley     A Pied Wagtail, 11+ Swallows, a female Sparrowhawk, 10+ Skylarks, 6+ Swifts, five House Martins, five Blackcaps, nine Whitethroats, nine Yellowhammers, two Corn Buntings, two Grey Partridges, a Buzzard, a Kestrel, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Roe Deer today. (Mark Grieve).

Tuesday 20th June 2017

Forest of Dean    At Brierley two Buzzards, Chiffchaffs, a family of Goldfinches, Willow Warblers, Jays and a Mistle Thrush. Other sightings included Silver-washed Fritillary, Red Admiral, Ringlet, Speckled Wood, Comma and Large Skipper butterflies, a female Emperor Dragonfly, a female Golden-ringed Dragonfly with Bumble-Bee prey, and Black-tailed Skimmers. Symonds Yat     From Yat Rock viewpoint the resident Peregrines with their three juveniles, Ravens, Buzzards, Sand Martins, House Martins and Swallows, two Pied Wagtails, Jays, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers. Other sightings included Hummingbird Hawkmoths, Red Admiral, Speckled Wood and Painted Lady butterflies and three Bank Voles. (Chris & Phil Andrews).

Halmore     Four Red Kites over at 9:30am near Acton Court, one still around at 1:30pm. (Paul Sutton).

Moreton-in-Marsh     A Red Kite over the Fire Training Centre Training Ground at 6:40am and again at 5:45pm. (Brett Lomax).

Brockeridge Common     Three Lapwings flew up from a dried up pool at  SO8865038364, then flew off northwards. Also many Willow Warblers, Whitethroats, Yellowhammers, a few Reed Buntings and a Lesser Whitethroat. (Robert Homan).

Coombe Hill Meadows     This morning three Cuckoos, a Grasshopper Warbler, two Willow Warbler, three Chiffchaffs, two male Reed Warblers, Whitethroats plentiful, a Lesser Whitethroat heard, a Kingfisher, nine Curlews, an Oystercatcher with 42 Lapwings on mowed meadows, a Bullfinch pair with three young, five Goldfinches, a Buzzard, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, two pairs of Mute Swan (1 pair with 8 cygnets), five Cormorants over and three Grey Herons. Cheltenham     A Little Egret fishing in the River Chelt at Sandford Park, a short way NW (downstream) from the Keynsham Road bridge, at 11:20am today. (Andrew Simon).

WWT Slimbridge    From Mid Point/Summer walkway, an OSPREY flew N at 2:15pm mobbed by three Oystercatchers, also a Skylark, 25+ Swallows, two Reed Warblers, 38+ Shelducks, a Curlew, a Sedge Warbler, a Cormorant and a Chiffchaff. On the Rushy 78 Black-tailed Godwits, nine Avocets, three Lapwings, a Common Crane, two Mediterranean Gulls and a Pied Wagtail. Along the Holden Walkway, two Oystercatchers, a Reed Bunting, six Shelducks, a Blackcap, a Cetti’s Warbler, three Reed Warblers, a Little Egret, six Lapwings, three Pied Wagtails, seven Avocets and a Skylark. From Robbie Garnett hide a Green Sandpiper. From Zeiss Hide, a Reed Warbler, a Reed Bunting, three Avocets, three Shelducks and six Lapwings. On South Lake, three Oystercatchers, 51+ Avocets, 30 Redshanks, three Lapwings, three Green Sandpipers, a Common Crane with two chicks and two Shovelers. (Mark Grieve).

Symonds Yat     From Yat Rock viewpoint the Peregrine pair and their three juveniles, two Buzzards, Jays, a Green Woodpecker, a Grey Heron, Ravens, Chiffchaffs and two juvenile Bullfinches. Other sightings included Hummingbird Hawkmoths, a Ringlet, Painted Lady and Speckled Wood butterflies, a White-legged Damselfly, a Bank Vole and a Musk Beetle. Woodford     This morning a Red Kite was circling over freshly mown meadow next to the A38 and then came over the garden nearby. Also a pair of Buzzards did the same. (Geoff Poulton).

Ashleworth Ham     Seven adult Canada Geese including a pair with four goslings, a male and a female Teal, two Mallards, a Little Egret, two Grey Herons, a Buzzard, two Lapwings, a Little Ringed Plover, two Curlews, a Green Sandpiper, a Cuckoo, c6 House Martins, c12 Swallows and two Nuthatches. Coombe Hill Meadows     A pair of Oystercatchers still with two young, 28 adult Lapwings with at least three broods of young, two broods of Redshanks, a Little Ringed Plover, ten adult Curlews, two Little Egrets, two adult Grey Herons with three juveniles, an adult male Wigeon, a Grasshopper Warbler still reeling strongly, a Cuckoo, 4-5 Sedge Warblers, 2-3 Whitethroats, 5-6 Reed Buntings and 20 Long-tailed Tits. Also many Meadow Brown butterflies and an Emperor Moth caterpillar. (Mike Smart).
