Four Little Egrets, two Shelducks, 53 Gadwalls, a Marsh Harrier, an Oystercatcher, a Green Sandpiper and 22 Meadow Pipits at Pit 201B. 115 Pintails, 142 Wigeon, 60 Shovelers, 143 Teal, 16 Gadwalls and two Oystercatcher at Pit 75. Coombe Hill Meadows    Three Mute Swans, a pair of Egyptian Geese, two Shelducks, 100 Wigeon, 270 Teal, seven Gadwalls, 30 Mallards, 96+ Pintails, 115+ Shovelers, 60 Tufted Ducks, two Great Crested Grebes, a Little Grebe, two Cattle Egrets, 20 Coots, two Oystercatchers, eight Lapwings, a Dunlin, 35 Black-tailed Godwits, c11 Curlews, three Redshanks, 10+ Skylarks, a Cetti’s Warbler, 5+ Chiffchaffs singing, 3+ Reed Buntings singing and nine Sand Martins through. Ashleworth Ham     This afternoon 15 Tufted Ducks (9m, 6f), a Great Crested Grebe, 15 Shovelers, 19 Pintails, 55 Greylags, 31 Canada Geese, 98 Wigeon, 15 Teal, two Gadwalls,
12 Mallards, a Moorhen, two Mute Swans, two Chiffchaffs singing and five Long-tailed Tits. A distant Curlew briefly heard towards Wainlodes. (John Fletcher).

Westonbirt    Two male FIRECRESTS having a territorial singing battle. Also three Ravens today. (Megan Adamou).

Nailsworth     A pair of Dippers, a Kingfisher and a Grey Wagtail on the Nailsworth stream today. (Terry Grant).

Quedgeley     At 10:30pm a Barn Owl over the traffic lights at Olympus Park, going North. (Paul Sutton).

Forest of Dean     At Nagshead from 3pm to 5 pm a Siskin and a Blackcap heard, 1+ Hawfinch and 3+ Redwings on the Lower trail. A LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER, a Chiffchaff and a male Peregrine. At New Fancy View from 5:15pm to 6pm close views of a male Goshawk from the car park. Also Siskin and Chiffchaff heard and a pair of Bullfinches. (Stephen Curtis & Carol Rushton).

WWT Slimbridge    On the Rushy two WHOOPER SWANS and ten Bewick’s Swans and also a Spotted Redshank. Around the reserve a Ringed Plover, two Peregrines, a female Marsh Harrier and three unringed Common Cranes. (John Fletcher/Andy Jayne). Coombe Hill Meadows     This morning four Mute Swans, four Shelducks, 100+ Wigeon, ten Gadwalls, 700 Teal, 20 Mallards, 170+ Pintails, 70+ Shovelers, 60 Tufted Ducks, two Great Crested Grebes, two Little Grebes, a Cormorant, two Little Egrets, four Cattle Egrets, a Buzzard, a Red Kite, 15 Coots, two Oystercatchers, ten Lapwings, five Dunlins, 21 Black-tailed Godwits, nine Curlews (including one with yellow ring AJ which nests across the river and was observed in winter 2023/24 in Ireland), at least one Redshank, five Herring Gulls, 50 Black-headed Gulls, ten Skylarks, two Chiffchaffs singing and four Reed Buntings singing. WWT Slimbridge     Still 11 Bewick’s Swans this morning and two WHOOPER SWANS on the Rushy. A LITTLE RINGED PLOVER seen and a Bar-tailed Godwit joining the birds on the Tack Piece. (Neil Smart). Maisemore Ham     59 Mute Swans, two Egyptian Geese, 12 Shelducks, two Shovelers, three Gadwalls, three Tufted Ducks, 21 Coots, 43 Stock Doves and a Cetti’s Warbler. Nearby 19 Shelducks and 31 Pintails on the River Leadon flood. (Andy Jayne).

Monday 11th March 2024

Purton     This morning birds included a 2cy/1st-winter CASPIAN GULL feeding over tidal floods for a few minutes, then flew inland E with a mixed flock of large gulls, five Mediterranean Gulls, six Rock Pipits and 280 Chaffinches flew N. (Francis Steuck).

Amberley     At Theescombe Lane a Red Kite, three Buzzards and two Ravens over the house this morning. On feeders male and female Blackcap, three Greenfinches, three Siskins (2m, 1f) and 65 Goldfinches gathering pre-roost in tops of birch trees in the garden. (Phil Williams).

Sharpness     Late afternoon two Rock Pipits, four Cormorants, two Oystercatchers, 12 Wigeon, a Grey Heron, a Little Egret, eight Redshanks, two Mistle Thrushes and a Kingfisher heard. (Clare Glanville).

Forest of Dean     From New Fancy View c5 Greylags, a male Crossbill, eight Siskins and two Stock Doves in the morning. There again from 4-4:30pm 15 WAXWINGS flew up the valley and landed in a tree top, stayed for a minute then flew to another nearby tree showing well. Also another Crossbill. At Cannop ponds/Stonework’s feeders 1130-1200
a Marsh Tit, two Siskins, a Grey Wagtail, a Little Grebe and a Greylag. At Nagshead a Blackcap, a Chiffchaff and eight Fallow Deer. At Parkend near the cricket pitch in the afternoon six Siskins, a Stock Dove and a Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming. Nearby at Parkend church 50 Siskins, two FIRECRESTS in the graveyard, two Hawfinches, a Marsh Tit, a Buzzard and a Redwing. (Nick Page/Bristol Ornithological Club). Four Bramblings on Serridge Ridge. Guscar Rocks/Aylburton Warth     WeBS count today 12 Canada Geese, 31 Shelducks, 137 Wigeon, two Mallards, 140 Teal, five Oystercatchers, 80 Dunlins, a Black-tailed Godwit, 202 Curlews, 24 Redshanks, 100 Black-headed Gulls, 50 Common Gulls, five Lesser Black-backed Gulls and two Herring Gulls. Also a male Peregrine, 10+ singing Skylarks, a Fieldfare and a singing Chiffchaff. (Mike Smart).

Berkeley shore/Pill     WeBS count today two Canada Geese, a Grey Heron, 23 Shelducks, 26 Mallards, three Teal, 134 Wigeon, four Oystercatchers, three Turnstones, 25 Dunlins, six Redshanks, a Curlew, two Avocets floating down river with the tide with the gulls, 522 Common Gulls and 60+ Black-headed Gulls, a Great Black-backed Gull, three Herring Gulls, two Moorhens, a Water Rail, a SHORT-EARED OWL at 8:30am and then flushed and flew across the estuary towards Lydney, a Stonechat, 12 Reed Buntings, a Sparrowhawk and two Chiffchaffs singing. Walmore Common    A leucistic Lapwing today, probably the one seen at Slimbridge earlier this year. Also eight Shelducks, a Shoveler, five Gadwalls, 28 Wigeon, 200 Teal, 10+ Mallards, 23 Lapwings, three Curlews, 14 Dunlins, a JACK SNIPE, 12 Snipe, four Grey Herons, five Little Egrets and 110 Redwings. Forest of Dean    This morning six Goosanders (1m, 5f), a male Teal at Woorgreens, at Nagshead lots of Siskins and a Goshawk. At Cannop ponds, ten Mandarins (8m, 2f), three Little Grebes, two Grey Wagtails and a Nuthatch. (Steve Pullen).

Leigh Meadows     A Shelduck, ten Mallards, a Curlew and at Haw Bridge/Wainlodes, 750 Black-headed Gulls and two Common Gulls and a Greenfinch. (Mike Smart).

Cobney Meadows     Two Mute Swans, five Shelducks, ten Wigeon, two Gadwalls, five Mallards, six Pintails, two Coots, a Moorhen, two Oystercatchers, seven Curlews (including the first observation this year of colour-ringed Blue Red Red, which was originally caught as an adult in September 2010 at its wintering area on the estuary near Lydney, and has returned to this area every spring and summer since then, so it is at least 15 years old), a Redshank, 500 Black-headed Gulls and a Common Gull. Also c50 Fieldfares with a few Redwings in the tops of the willows. (Mike Smart).

Tewkesbury    At Mitton on the wet field immediately south of Bredon’s Hardwick, 110 Wigeon, 110 Teal, three Mallards, two Oystercatchers, a Lapwing and 57 Black-headed Gulls. (Mike Smart).

Highnam woods     This afternoon two Marsh Tits, two Goldcrests, two Nuthatches, a Coal Tit, three Song Thrushes, eight Long-tailed Tits, six Redwings, nine Fieldfares, three Great Spotted Woodpeckers (2 drumming), a Jay, three Chaffinches, two Ravens and two Buzzards. (John Fletcher).

Ryeford     A drake Goosander on the canal and an OTTER seen on the river by Ebley Mill today. (Phil Pope).

Dudbridge    A Little Egret flew high over the Stroudwater Canal early this morning. (Julian Gould).

Aylburton     Over the village this morning three Red Kites attempting to swoop into the garden of the Old Hospital, mobbed by seven Jackdaws. Also nine Starlings, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and two Buzzards. (John Meadows).

Coombe Hill Meadows     The Grundon hide accessible with wellies, but the paths very muddy and slippery. Birds included two Mute Swans, 100+ Wigeon, 400 Teal, five Gadwalls, 20+ Mallards, 20+ Pintails, 50+ Shovelers, 70 Tufted Ducks, a Little Grebe, 18 Little Egrets, three Grey Herons, two Oystercatchers, 35 Lapwings, nine Curlews, a passage of 50 Black-headed Gulls NE and two singing Reed Buntings. Ashleworth Ham     39 Greylags, five Canada Geese, ten Wigeon, 25 Teal, ten Gadwalls, ten Mallards, 15 Pintails, ten Tufted Ducks, a Great Crested Grebe and 25 Black-headed Gulls. (Mike Smart).

Purton     Six adult LITTLE GULLS flew NE upriver past Purton at 8:08am. (Francis Steuck).

Gloucester     At Saintbridge Pond in the main reedbed area near the wooded path on the N side of the pond a SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF and Cetti’s Warbler. Also two Chiffchaffs and a Water Rail. On pond there were 12 Teal, 13 Mallards and two Moorhens. Other birds included two Goldcrests, five Long-tailed Tits, five Goldfinches, a Grey Wagtail and two Collared Doves. (Paul Brunt).

Nailsworth     A male Brambling (seen daily since 26 February) on garden feeders at Windsoredge, along with a variety of finches including up to 20 Siskins and 40 Goldfinches. (Terry Grant).
