Saturday 15th July 2017

WWT Slimbridge     A female/1st year COMMON SCOTER flew low upriver past the Land Rover Safari/Midpoint at 2:20pm. Also today five Ruff, a Greenshank, 16 Curlews, 200+ Black-tailed Godwits, 12 Common Terns and a Hobby. (Tom Weston-McClung).

Walmore Common     Four Whinchats, a Snipe and at least 60 Sand Martins today. (Andy Jayne).

Coombe Hill Meadows     The Little Ringed Plover pair still brooding four chicks on north scrape, plus two adults on Long Pool, also four Redshanks, 60 Lapwings, at least four Green Sandpipers, three Teal, 30 Mallards, a female Tufted Duck and two Little Egrets. (Mike Smart).

Tewkesbury     On Severn Ham a Mute Swan with six cygnets and a Little Egret on the Mill Avon, ten House Martins and two Sand Martins hawking insects and 150 Rooks on the cut hay areas. (Mike Smart).

Forest of Dean    At Newnham-on-Severn a Curlew on the riverbank. At Wenchford a Buzzard, two Dippers, a family of Grey Wagtails, Ringlet, Meadow Brown and Small White butterflies. At Mallards Pike a Treecreeper, a Jay, Swallows and Grey Wagtails. (Chris & Phil Andrews). A garden Sparrowhawk in Coleford this morning caught a fledgling. (Geoff Fawcett).

Symonds Yat     From Yat Rock the Peregrines, Ravens, Buzzards, a Hobby, Swifts, Swallows, Hummingbird Hawkmoths and a Fallow Deer with a Fawn. Butterflies in the area included Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, Large, Small and Green-veined Whites, Gatekeeper, Holly Blue, Ringlet, Meadow Brown, Small Copper and Silver-washed Fritillaries. Also a five spot Burnet moth, Emerald and Common Blue Damselflies. (Chris & Phil Andrews).

Frampton     At the Sailing Lake early morning the adult Yellow-legged Gull again, also four Oystercatchers and eight Common Terns and six young. (Nick Goatman).

Coombe Hill Meadows     A Cuckoo along the canal this morning and a Redstart. (Martin Harrison). Four Little Egrets, three Grey Herons, at least 50 Lapwings, a Little Ringed Plover, a Green Sandpiper, two pairs of Coots with three young each, two Moorhens, a pair of Mute Swans with eight well grown cygnets, five Skylarks, a Greenfinch, four Reed Buntings and a Kingfisher. Bisley to Brimscombe     Four House Martins, a Kestrel, four Buzzards, 26+ Linnets, two Yellowhammers, six Swallows, 6+ Chiffchaffs, a Mistle Thrush, four Jays, a Nuthatch, a Raven, a Bullfinch, a Whitethroat and a family party of five Spotted Flycatchers at Battlescombe. (Mark Grieve).

Coombe Hill Meadows     This evening the pair of Little Ringed Plovers and four chicks still intact despite a close encounter with a Fox. Also around the reserve a Teal, two Little Egrets, an Oystercatcher, 54 Lapwings, an adult Dunlin, eight Green Sandpipers, five Redshanks, a Barn Owl, a Hobby, a Sand Martin, 50 Swallows, two Redstarts, an adult male and juvenile Whinchat, a juvenile Stonechat and a Yellow Wagtail. Symonds Yat     In the Yat Rock area today the Peregrines and their three juveniles, Buzzards, Ravens, a juvenile Grey Heron, a Green Woodpecker, a family of nine Mandarins, Stock Doves, a Jay, Swifts, Swallows and House Martins. Other sightings included Silver-washed Fritillaries, Meadow Brown, Large, Small and Green-veined Whites, Red Admiral, Holly Blue, Comma, Ringlet and Speckled Wood butterflies, Hummingbird Hawkmoths, Wood Mice, Bank Voles and a Fallow Deer. Bisley     A Red Kite flew low over the village, also 15+ House Martins, 10+ Swifts, 12+ Swallows, two Yellowhammers, a Whitethroat, three Buzzards, two Skylarks, a Green Woodpecker, three Bullfinches, three Chiffchaffs, a Nuthatch, two Jays, a Kestrel, two Stock Doves and a Sparrowhawk. Frampton     A Red Kite was chased off by Common Terns and a Kingfisher and three Green Woodpeckers around the gravel wash area today. (Les Ditchburn). The Yellow-legged Gull on the Sailing Lake at 9:44am. (Geoff Moyser).

WWT Slimbridge     On South Lake 20+ Black-tailed Godwit, three Ruff, three Green Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper, a Greenshank, 50+ Lapwings, Avocets and a GCRP Crane chick with parents. (Les Ditchburn).

Epney     A Yellow-legged Gull, two Little Egrets and a Common Gull tonight. (Jeremy Squire).

Coombe Hill Meadows     A QUAIL heard calling from long grass near to the Grundon hide. (John Fletcher/Mike Smart). Other birds included a pair of Little Ringed Plovers with four tiny chicks, a Little Owl, 83 Lapwings, three Little Egrets, three Grey Herons, five Reed Buntings, two Bullfinches (1 juv), three Greenfinches, nine Goldfinches, five Linnets, two Willow Warblers, six Sedge Warblers, two Whitethroats (1 juv), five Pied Wagtails, four Buzzards, three Skylarks, a Redstart and 19 Swallows (5 juvs). (John Fletcher). In the evening the QUAIL still in front of the hide, a Green Sandpiper, a Redshank calling, eight Swifts, eight Grey Herons and 14 Greylags flew in to roost. (Mike Smart).

Forest of Dean    This evening three Nightjars (2m) churring from 9:35pm, a family of Stonechats with 3 or 4 juveniles and four Linnets. (Nick Hawkridge with BOC/Bristol Nats & GNS).

Symonds Yat     In the Yat Rock area the Peregrines and the three juveniles, Buzzards, Ravens, a Green Woodpecker, Chiffchaffs, a pair of Blackcaps, a Marsh Tit, Long-tailed Tits, Stock Doves, a Jay, an adult and a juvenile Grey Heron, a Nuthatch, a Tawny Owl calling, Swifts, Swallows and House Martins. Other sightings included Holly Blue, Marbled White, Small Tortoiseshell, Silver-washed Fritillaries, Comma, Ringlet, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Green-veined White, Small and Large White butterflies, White-legged Damselflies, Humming-bird Hawkmoths, Bank Voles and Wood Mice. Cleeve Hill     This morning two Corn Buntings singing along West Down. Also families of Spotted Flycatcher and Redstarts in West Wood and Tree Pipits singing in fields bordering the wood. Dozens of Marbled Whites in the fields between West Wood and Wontley Barn. (Chris Stott).

Gloucester     In Tewkesbury Road a male Green Woodpecker anting on the lawn at 2:10pm today. (David & Sandra Spicer).

Ashleworth Ham     A CE ringing session today caught 117 birds, including an adult Redstart, an adult female Grasshopper Warbler, 12 Sedge Warblers, five Blackcaps, 41 Whitethroats, a juvenile Lesser Whitethroat, 12 Chiffchaffs, six Reed Buntings and a juvenile Treecreeper. Also a Buzzard and an Oystercatcher heard. (Mervyn Greening, Mike Smart).

Cotswold Water Park East     At Pit 126: 4 four summer-plumaged Black-tailed Godwits, a Little Ringed Plover, a Common Sandpiper, eight Common Terns, two Little Egrets, 25 Lapwings on the sandbank and a Small Copper along the footpath. (John Durell).
