Tirley Sandpits     105+ Fieldfares, 50+ Redwings, 24+ Skylarks, seven Pied Wagtails, five Meadow Pipits, four Stock Doves, a Mistle Thrush, two Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Green Woodpecker, 14 Lesser Redpolls and two Bullfinches today. (Mark Grieve).

WWT Slimbridge    A CATTLE EGRET and a Dark-bellied Brent Goose from Holden Tower early morning. (Paul Rich). 18 Bewick’s Swans including four cygnets this morning (one family with one cygnet and one with three). (Julia Newth).

Cirencester     A Corn Bunting still in fields N of Sisters Wood N of Cirencester. (Ali Brooks).

Frampton     The GREAT WHITE EGRET on Court Lake again today. Also a late Swallow over Court Lake, a MEALY REDPOLL still, a female Goldeneye on the Sailing Lake and the Yellow-legged Gull still. (Paul Rich/Nick Goatman/Roy Widgery).

Symonds Yat     In the Yat Rock area the resident Peregrines, two Buzzards, Ravens, a Kingfisher, Long-tailed Tit flocks, a Goldcrest, a Treecreeper, two Great Spotted Woodpeckers, a Marsh Tit, Jays, a Grey Heron, also eight Blackbirds, two Mistle Thrushes, a Song Thrush, a Goldfinch, a female Bullfinch, a Redwing and a Robin all feeding together in a Rowan Tree. Forest of Dean     At Cannop Ponds a male Gadwall amongst the Mallards on the top pond today. (Chris & Phil Andrews).

Coombe Hill Meadows      On the Long Pool, two Mute Swans, ten Wigeon, 59 Teal, four Shovelers, a Snipe flushed from a ditch, eight Meadow Pipits, a female Stonechat along the towpath, 20 Fieldfares, ten Redwings and 20 Linnets. Also 301 Canada Geese, two Greylags and a Grey Heron. (Mike Smart).

Frampton     At the reed bed N of Splatt Bridge a WATER PIPIT, two Water Rails, five Snipe and two Green Sandpipers. Nearby two adult Bewick’s Swans flew towards WWT over Saul Warth. (Gordon Hodgson). A GREAT WHITE EGRET on Court Lake at 12:30pm. (Martin Greenish). The BITTERN showed well but briefly on Court Lake in the reed bed mid-morning. (Paul Masters/Andy Chapman). Tirley Sandpits     Two Bullfinches, 15 Blackbirds, 11 Skylarks, five Meadow Pipits, 131+ Fieldfares, 15 Stock Doves, three Ravens, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Green Woodpecker, 62+ Redwings, two Lesser Redpolls, four Mistle Thrushes, 45+ Lapwings flew N, a female Sparrowhawk and ten Cormorants flew upriver. (Mark Grieve).

WWT Slimbridge     On the Rushy a CATTLE EGRET this morning on South Lake and a GREAT WHITE EGRET over. (Slimbridge Sightings). At midday on South Lake 57 Knot, 100+ Black-tailed Godwits, four Dunlins, five Redshanks and seven Shovelers. (Paul Daunter/John Fletcher).

Sharpness     A BLACK REDSTART briefly this morning at the end of Dock Road. (Andy Jordan).

Frampton     A Goshawk at Frampton Court and a Goosander on Court Lake today. (Gordon Hodgson).

Cotswold Water Park East     At Pit 125 a Goldeneye, two Cetti’s Warbler, a Water Rail 163 Tufted Ducks and 383 Coots. 22 Egyptian Geese at Pit 132 this morning. (Ian Ralphs).

Bibury      445 Golden Plovers, 242 Lapwings, 34 Stock Doves and 300 Starlings near Bratch Copse SP14/07 today. (Ian Ralphs).

Tewkesbury     At Lower Lode this morning two Mute Swans, two Greylags, 36 Mallards, five male Shovelers, 15 Tufted Ducks, two Little Grebes, 66 Black-headed Gulls, eight Cormorants, 16 Coots and 16 Goldfinches. (Les Brown).

Ashleworth Ham     This morning a Canada Goose, 38 Mallards, two male Shovelers, 12 Wigeon, a Grey Heron, an adult male Peregrine and a Red Kite. (Les Brown).

Thursday 3rd November 2016

Forest of Dean     A GREAT GREY SHRIKE briefly at Crabtree Hill at 7:45am, but no sign since then. (Andy Jayne). Another or the same GREAT GREY SHRIKE at 1pm in the new clearing along the cycle track between Burnt Log and Three Brothers, Russell’s Inclosure. Access opposite New Fancy View. Please keep to the two main tracks which gives great views, avoids disturbing the bird and removes risk injuring yourself. (Lewis Thomson).

Slimbridge     Two CATTLE EGRETS with cattle in the field opposite the school, adjacent to the A38 at 10:45am (reported that after leaving the roost they have been splitting into two groups of 2 and 4 respectively and feeding during the day at separate sites). (John Widgery).

WWT Slimbridge     On the Rushy, the first BEWICK’S SWANS (2 ads, 1 juv) of the winter. From the Holden Tower late morning a Marsh Harrier quartering the E bank of the River Severn, also a male Sparrowhawk and 20+ White-fronted Geese. (John Widgery/Bob Philpott/Slimbridge Sightings).

Wednesday 2nd November 2016

Frampton     An exceptionally late Whitethroat and a Fieldfare ringed today. (Maurice Durham).

Purton     At the Timber Ponds a BITTERN showing well from 4:30–5pm at the edge of the reeds on the NE side of the inlet having two poles at the entrance. Also a Water Rail heard, a Kingfisher and circa 500 Starlings coming to roost. (Vic Polley)

WWT Slimbridge     The six CATTLE EGRETS left the South Lake roost at 8:25am. A female MERLIN around the Dumbles early afternoon. (Slimbridge Sightings/Mark Dowie).

Slimbridge     Six CATTLE EGRETS with cattle in a field adjoining the canal (NE of the canal bridge at Shepherd’s Patch on the approach to WWT Slimbridge) and visible from road to WWT mid-morning. Later relocating to field adjacent to A38 roundabout by Slimbridge school. (Pete & Marjo Lewis).

Berkeley shore     A WATER PIPIT near the mouth of Berkeley Pill early afternoon, with possibly a second bird here. Also an all-dark juvenile Marsh Harrier hunting  over the salt marsh here, then flying up the estuary. Also three Stonechats here. (Pete & Marjo Lewis).

Cleeve Hill     The GREAT GREY SHRIKE still today, also seven Golden Plovers and 1000+ Woodpigeons. (Greg Mabbett).

Tewkesbury     At Tewkesbury Nature Reserve a Buzzard, a Kestrel, a Grey Heron, a Snipe, a Little Grebe, two Mute Swans, 13 Mallards and 100+ Starlings today. (Chris Vowles).

Forest of Dean     c40 Siskins near Meadowcliff pond, Steam Mills flushed by a Buzzard and c30 Redwings at Foxes Bridge. (Rose Smith).

Cheltenham    At Naunton Park this morning three Cormorants over high towards the SW, an unexpected garden tick.  Also a Buzzard. (Steve Brown).

Slimbridge      The six CATTLE EGRETS presumably roosted on South Lake, WWT again. They were relocated in Slimbridge village in the field immediately adjacent to the A38 roundabout, park in the car park at the Legion Shop, and not outside the school. They returned to South Lake at 3:30pm. (Slimbridge Sightings/Paul Rich/Mark Grieve).

WWT Slimbridge    On South Lake 58 Mallards, a Grey Heron, 49 Tufted Ducks, 56 Shovelers, three Pochards, a Little Grebe, 203+ Teal, a Shelduck, 51+ Lapwings, a Grey Wagtail and a Snipe. From Zeiss hide 25 White-fronted Geese, a Cetti’s Warbler, 542+ Lapwings, 100+ Wigeon, 42 Black-tailed Godwits, five Redshanks, five Snipe, two Water Rail, 600+ Teal, 25 Shelduck and a Redwing over. From South Finger/Kingfisher hide, 700+ Wigeon, 80+ Teal, two Golden Plovers, 292 Lapwings and 35 Curlews. From Holden Tower/Holden Tower walkway, a Grey Wagtail, 100+ Teal, 15 GCRP Common Cranes, two Peregrines, 200+ Lapwings, two Dunlins and three Golden Plovers. On the Rushy 18 Pintails, 53 Pochards, 54 Teal, 25 Shelducks and 50 Tufted Ducks. Cotswold Water Park West     At Shorncote reedbed, birds included two Water Rails, two Little Egrets, a Stonechat and four Cetti’s Warbler today. (Ali Brooks).

Sharpness     Two BLACK REDSTARTS again at the end of Dock Road today. (David Hanks).

Coombe Hill Meadows    Water remaining on the Long Pool only.  Otters have been seen from the Long Pool hide twice in last three days, feeding on stranded carp and eels. (Gavin Black, 29th). Birds included 140 Teal, two Gadwalls, ten Mallards, a Shoveler, two Grey Herons, a male Sparrowhawk, two Snipe, six Meadow Pipits, two Skylarks, 60 Fieldfares, ten Redwings and 25 Goldfinches. Cheltenham     A Tawny Owl calling at 9:15pm outside The Gloster Old Spot Pub. (Mark Grieve).

Cherington     At Cherington Lake birds included 81 Redwings, two Little Grebes, five Long-tailed Tits, 11 Coots, a Green Woodpecker, a Nuthatch, two Grey Wagtails, a Jay and a Tawny Owl hooting at 4:15pm. (John Fletcher)

Monday 31st October 2016

WWT Slimbridge     A SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF heard and seen briefly at Knott Hide again this morning, then headed off towards the Duck Decoy again. (Slimbridge Sightings). A female Marsh Harrier from Holden Tower at 3:20pm flying upriver and then again at 3:35pm when it seemed to settle to roost in the reed beds to the N. (Tony Jenkins).

Frampton     The BITTERN showed very briefly early afternoon along the edge of the reedbed in the NE corner of Court Lake. (Roberta Goodall).

Beachley Point     The two Whimbrels were back on Chapel Rock over high tide this morning, and later on the shore immediately S of the road bridge. Both were checked for pale rumps. After high tide there were two Curlews, ten Redshanks, four Oystercatchers, five Grey Plovers, 6 six Knot and 26 Dunlins. (John Sanders).

Rodley     15 Ruff at Lower Dumball and seven Stonechats around the peninsula. (John Sanders).
