Frampton     Early morning on the Sailing Lake a Green Sandpiper, a Common Sandpiper, six Common Terns, two Grey Wagtails, 88 Black-headed Gulls, two Common Gulls and six Pied Wagtails. (Nick Goatman).

Sharpness     21 Mandarins on the canal between Sharpness and Purton today. A moult gathering as in previous years. (Andy Jordan).

Tirley     A calling Tawny Owl at 1am. At Tirley Sandpits a Green Woodpecker, four Great Spotted Woodpeckers, two Ravens, 8+ Chiffchaffs, 28+ Swallows, eight Whitethroats, 17+ House Martins, six Skylarks, a Little Owl calling briefly, seven Stock Doves, a Spotted Flycatcher, two Blackcaps, three Bullfinches, 2+ Willow Warblers, a Yellowhammer, a Greylag over and a Fox. (Mark Grieve).

Nailsworth     An OSPREY flew W at 4:40 pm and dropped to tree top height over Windsoredge, heading towards Woodchester Park. (Terry Grant).

Tirley Sandpits     15+ Chiffchaffs, two Ravens, four Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 15+ House Martins, 21+ Swallows, 4+ Bullfinches, 13+ Whitethroats, two Green Woodpeckers, two Skylarks, two male Redstarts, two Pied Wagtails, two Stock Doves, two Willow Warblers, a Yellowhammer and a Lesser Whitethroat. (Mark Grieve).

Edge     At Rudge Hill NNR 14 Meadow Pipits, two Buzzards, eight Long-tailed Tits, four Chiffchaffs, two Bullfinches and a Green Woodpecker. (John Fletcher).

Symonds Yat    In the Yat Rock area the Peregrine pair and juvenile male, a Goshawk, Buzzards, 15 Ravens kettling together, a Green Woodpecker, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, Song Thrushes, Pied Wagtails and a Goldcrest. Other sightings included Large White, Holly Blue, Painted Lady, Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Green-veined White,  Small Tortoiseshell and Gatekeeper butterflies, Hummingbird Hawk Moths and a buck Fallow Deer. Coombe Hill Meadows     A pair of Mute Swans with four cygnets, a juvenile Shelduck, a Teal, six Little Egrets, two Grey Herons, 60 Lapwings, an immature Redshank, at least three Green Sandpipers, two Redstarts, three Whinchats, Sedge Warblers still churring in ditches, a few juvenile Chiffchaffs calling from hedges and a Reed Bunting. Tewkesbury     At Severn Ham ten Black-headed Gulls , a Swift, three Skylarks, 100 Rooks and 15 Carrion Crows. (Mike Smart).

Friday 29th July 2016

Longney     This evening a Little Egret, a Hobby, two Oystercatchers, two Common Sandpipers, a Redshank, a second-summer Mediterranean Gull and a Yellow Wagtail. (Andy Jayne).

Stanley Downton    A Red Kite over the fields at Stanley Downton, early afternoon, then flew SW. (Paul Sutton).

Cheltenham     A Kingfisher today on the River Chelt at Copt Elm Close SO964209. (Laurie Pierce).

WWT Slimbridge      A Marsh Harrier still around the grounds today. Also ten Green Sandpipers and a Common Sandpiper. (Roberta Goodall).

Tirley     In the garden four Chiffchaffs and two Lesser Whitethroats, in the hedgerow above the cottage a Spotted Flycatcher, a male Redstart, two Chiffchaffs and a Willow Warbler. (Mark Grieve).

Frampton     The first juvenile Common Tern off the raft and flying today at the Sailing Lake.  (Nick Goatman).

Duntisbourne Rouse    This evening in a field near Duntisbourne Rouse a mixed flock including three Yellowhammers, eight Goldfinches, two Linnets, a Corn Bunting  and c6 Chaffinches, and a Red Kite overhead at Winstone. On the same road very early this morning a Barn Owl hawking the same field. Ebworth     Migrants included four Swifts, 51 Swallows, four House Martins, six Linnets and a Whimbrel. Birds present included a Kestrel, a Buzzard, four Linnets, 14 Yellowhammers, 20 Goldfinches, six Stock Doves and two Corn Buntings. (John Fleming).

Eastleach Martin    A minimum of five calling QUAILS on Locombe Hill N of Eastleach Martin at SP20600754 from the gates N to the crossroads and along the bridle way to the bare patch.  At Sheephouse Farm three more QUAILS calling near the footpath.  Also around the area four singing Corn Buntings, a Jay, a Green Woodpecker, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Kestrel and three families of Whitethroats.  Also a Little Egret flew down the River Leach towards Eastleach. Great Barrington     Two Little Owls at the thatched hut near the deer park today. (Steve Brown).

Sherborne     A Swift with 100+ House Martins and 50+ Swallows, a Jay and a Green Woodpecker. (Steve Brown).

Minsterworth Ham     Three Red-legged Partridges, a Kestrel, a Curlew, a Little Owl, a flock of 18 Mistle Thrushes, three Spotted Flycatchers, 11 Redstarts and a Whinchat today. (Andy Jayne).

Lower Rea     A Grasshopper Warbler seen and heard this evening in the hedge beside the pond next to the barley field on the Glevum Way. Please keep to the footpath. (Andy Chapman). Cotswold Water Park East     At Horcott, Fairford a Hobby, a Willow Warbler, two Chiffchaffs, three Blackcaps, a Yellow Wagtail, two Grey Wagtails, a juvenile Cuckoo in flight, a Kingfisher, two Reed Warblers and a Sedge Warbler. Also 20+ House Sparrows taking a dust bath. (Michael Cook).

Coombe Hill Meadows     At 8am today at 11 Whinchats, a Spotted Flycatcher, a Hobby, two Little Ringed Plovers, a Common Sandpiper, a Green Sandpiper, three Snipe and a Curlew. (Ian Hull).

Quenington     This evening a party of c20 Swifts screaming about. (Michael Cook).

Longlevens     This evening a party of c20 Swifts screaming over. (Andy Jayne).

Daneway    At Siccaridge Wood GWT reserve (SO935035)  a Cetti’s Warbler seen and heard at a pond at the W end of the wood. There were no records from this area during the atlas years, but Cetti’s have been noted nearby in the Stroud valleys before. (Andy Jayne).

Gloucester     At Horsebere Brook Flood Storage Lake today 3-4 Whinchats (3 juvs & a female), a juvenile Yellow Wagtail and a juvenile Stonechat. Butterflies included a Green-veined White, several Meadow Browns and a first sighting for this site of a SMALL PEARL-BORDERED FRITILLARY. (Alan Baxter).

Symonds Yat    The Peregrine pair and their juvenile male, a Red Kite, Ravens, Buzzards, a juvenile Grey Heron, a Green Woodpecker, four Stock Doves and two Marsh Tits. Also Holly Blue, Small, Large and Green-veined White, Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper butterflies and Hummingbird Hawk Moths. (Chris & Phil Andrews).Symond

Coombe Hill Meadows     A pair of Mute Swans with four cygnets, c75 Greylags, four Canada Geese, a juvenile Shelduck, c60 Mallards, four Teal, four Little Egrets, two Grey Herons, a pair of Coot with four juveniles and a pair at the Wharf with two juveniles, c80 Lapwings, two Little Ringed Plovers (ad & juv), a Redshank, four Green Sandpipers, three Snipe, two Stock Doves, seven Long-tailed Tits, some Swallows passing, Sedge Warblers, a Chiffchaff feeding young, a Whinchat, two Pied Wagtails and a Yellowhammer singing. (Les Brown/Mike Smart/Ian Hull/Rob Pruden). Eastleach Martin     Two QUAILS calling N of Sheephouse Farm at 1pm, also a singing Corn Bunting. (Jon Mercer).

WWT Slimbridge     A Little Ringed Plover and a Greenshank on the Rushy, five Ruff (2 males) and a Common Sandpiper on South Lake and c15 Green Sandpipers on site. (Paul Taylor).

Frampton     Seven Yellow Wagtails (2 juvs), two Grey Wagtails, a Lesser Whitethroat, eight Whitethroats, five Reed Warblers, two Garden Warblers and four Yellowhammers today. (Nick Goatman).

Gloucester     At Horsebere Brook Flood Storage Area this evening a Lapwing, a Common Sandpiper and a Snipe still present and also two Kingfishers, three Whinchats, a Stonechat, a Yellow Wagtail and 60 Goldfinches. (Andy Jayne).

Symonds Yat     The resident Peregrines and their juvenile male, Buzzards, a Sparrowhawk, two juvenile Goshawks, Ravens, two Mandarins, a Kingfisher and four Goosanders. Also a Painted Lady, a Silver-washed Fritillary, Gatekeeper, Ringlet, Large and Small White, Meadow Brown and Holly Blue butterflies and Hummingbird Hawk Moths. (Chris & Phil Andrews).

Coombe Hill Meadows    A pair of Mute Swans with four cygnets, a Greylag, an eclipse Wigeon, a Teal, 60 Mallards, eight Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, three pairs of Coots with nearly full grown young at the Wharf, south scrape and Long Pool, 80 Lapwings feeding on cut hayfields, a Little Ringed Plover, a Green Sandpiper, a Yellow Wagtail, a Reed Warbler and at least five Sedge Warblers. Belated news of a Marsh Harrier reported on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th July. (Les Brown/ Mike Smart).

Forthampton     Beside the River Severn near Forthampton a male Curlew with three just-flying chicks on 21st July, still there today with at least two chicks. (Mike Smart).

Clapton-on-the-Hill     Two Buzzards, 50+ Lapwings, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Little Egret today. Also a Weasel. (Ben Hilder).
