WWT Slimbridge      The GLOSSY IBIS showed well on Knott pool this morning but flew off at 8:30am and wasn’t relocated. Also a Cuckoo in the Decoy, a female Wigeon still on the Rushy, five Greenshanks from Zeiss hide and a pair of Oystercatchers with chicks on the roof of South Lake Observatory. (James Lees, WWT/MK). Tirley     Two garden Spotted Flycatchers this morning. Later around Tirley to Town Street Farm two Chiffchaffs, a Blackcap, two Whitethroats, eight Swallows, five House Martins, a Grey Heron over, three Skylarks and three Red-legged Partridges. (Mark Grieve).

Twyning     A pair of Gadwall on a small fishing pond and two calling Cuckoos over at Church End. (Sarah Loaring).

Forest of Dean     A Swift over Clearwell and a Skylark flying near Great Dunklins Farm , Parawell Lane, St. Briavels. (Paula Simpson).

Crickley Hill     At Barrow Wake viewpoint a WillowChiff (Willow Warbler or Chiffchaff)   combining both species songs. (Chris Stott). Recently Terry Fenton had a mixed singer like this at Witcombe and a one returned for 2 years at Frampton Sailing Lake in 2003/04.

Cleeve Hill     A Cuckoo, a Tree Pipit, Chiffchaffs, a Buzzard, a Kestrel, a Yellowhammer, Skylarks, two Willow Warblers, a Whitethroat, two Mistle Thrushes, a Jay and a Raven. Butterflies included Green Hairstreak (pic below by Phil), Small Blue, Green-veined White, Orange Tip, Holly Blue, Dingy Skipper, Speckled Wood, Brimstone and Small White. Down Ampney area    This morning at SU104958 very close to the Wilts border near Down Ampney airfield a female Merlin chasing a Sand Martin. Along Ampney Brook back towards Down Ampney, Driffield and Cirencester birds included three Sand Martins, four Blackcaps, two Willow Warblers, three Whitethroats, a Lesser Whitethroat, five Long-tailed Tits, two Reed Warblers, a Sedge Warbler, a Coal Tit, a Cuckoo, three Jays, a male Reed Bunting, a Grey Heron, five Lapwings, eight Skylarks, two Meadow Pipits, two Corn Buntings, three Linnets, a male Bullfinch,, a pair of Tufted Ducks and a Kingfisher. Also Orange Tip, Ringlet, Gatekeeper and Common Blue butterflies, a Stoat, three Brown Hares and five Roe Deer. (Michael Cook).

Guscar Rocks     Three ARCTIC SKUAS heading up river past Plusterwine at 2:10pm, two dark phase and a pale phase. Also 29 Whimbrels, two Bar-tailed Godwits, seven Sanderlings, 21 Ringed Plovers, four Dunlins, a Common Sandpiper and a male Yellow Wagtail early afternoon. (Lewis Thomson).

Coombe Hill Meadows     A Turnstone, a Dunlin and a Little Stint were chased off early by Avocets and flew off NE, another Little Stint appeared later, four Greenshanks flew off NW, but reappeared later. c50 House Martins, 12 Swallows, six Sand Martins and five Swifts went through to the NE, also two Pied Wagtails. Also an Avocet, an Oystercatcher, two Lapwings, five Redshanks, the pair of Shelducks still have seven tiny ducklings, the Greylags have three goslings, 1+ Cetti’s Warbler and 2+ Sedge Warblers. Ashleworth Ham    From the hide birds today included two Curlews, three Shelducks, a drake Teal, a drake Wigeon, four Tufted Ducks, 23 Mallards, five Lapwings, a Snipe, a Grey Heron, a male Redstart, two Swallows, a pair of Reed Buntings, three Sand Martins, two Chiffchaffs and a Cuckoo heard. Tuesday 10th May 2016

Frampton     At the Sailing Lake at 5:30pm an immature GLOSSY IBIS over being mobbed by two Black-headed Gulls. It circled the lake and eventually went off N low over the trees to the back of Court Lake. Also two BLACK TERNS and 6+ Common Terns. (Nigel Cramp). BLACK TERNS were present through the day with a maximum of eight at 11:15am (Steve Owen), also an ARCTIC TERN and 6+ Common Terns. (Nick Goatman).

Saul Warth     This morning from 9:45am-12:30pm two LITTLE TERNS, c123 ARCTIC TERNS and 13 BLACK TERNS. Waders included c40 Dunlins, 20 Ringed Plovers, a Greenshank, two Sanderlings, a Grey Plover, two Common Sandpipers and a few Whimbrels. (Pavlo Zaltowski).

Epney/Longney     The immature ICELAND GULL again this morning at Epney from 9:45-10:35am. (Jeremy Squire). Relocated at Longney at 6:20pm where it remained until 7:40pm at least. WWT Slimbridge     Four WOOD SANDPIPERS on the Top New Piece viewed from Zeiss hide today, with at least one remaining throughout the day. (@slimbridge_wild).

Sharpness      Five ARCTIC SKUAS (3 dark, 2 pale phase) N past SARA at 10:02am. Also 11 BLACK TERNS, 62 ARCTIC TERNS and three Common Terns flew N. Waders included 1+ CURLEW SANDPIPER, 12 Grey Plovers, 15 Knot, 11 Whimbrels, ten Black-tailed Godwit, a Common Sandpiper and small numbers of Dunlins and Ringed Plovers. (Paul Taylor). This evening another ARCTIC SKUA flew N at 7pm. (Andy Jordan).

Coombe Hill Meadows    Seven Ringed Plovers and a Greenshank present then 12 Dunlins and a winter plumaged Turnstone flew in, then all flew off NE.  Next two summer plumage Turnstones, a Sanderling, a Little Stint, and two Grey Plovers stopped over before heading NE, then two Wood Sandpipers and a second Little Stint arrived; four BLACK TERNS flew through NE, then 15 ARCTIC TERNS and a steady stream of hirundines, mainly Sand Martins but with a few Swallows and a Yellow Wagtail. Birds on the reserve included two Avocets, two Oystercatchers and four Lapwings, a Curlew and a pair of Shelducks with seven recently hatched tiny ducklings, an incredibly early date.  A male Hobby, the first of the year, flew over. Also a pair of Mute Swans, two Canada Geese, two Greylags, a Barnacle Goose, three Wigeon, four Gadwalls, a Teal, three Little Egrets. 12 Coots, a Cuckoo, two Cetti’s Warblers, at least 15 Sedge Warblers, at least five Whitethroats and two Lesser Whitethroats. Ashleworth Ham    From the hide early evening, a Curlew, two Grey Herons, a male Wigeon, five Gadwalls, a Blackcap, a Chiffchaff, seven Shelducks, a Teal, four Lapwings, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Bullfinch, a Redstart, a Cuckoo calling, a Little Egret and a Snipe. (Mark Grieve).

Forest of Dean     40+ House Martins this afternoon, viewed from Forge Hill, Lydbrook feeding and mobbing a Raven. Also a Great Spotted Woodpecker on a garden bird feeder and a Cuckoo calling at noon around Eastbach. (Chris Sullivan).

Forest of Dean     An ALPINE SWIFT flying S over Pope’s Hill, just before 5pm, but no further sign. (John & Viv Phillips). A Firecrest at Speech House at 6:10am and a Wood Warbler at Woorgreens at 6:30am. At Nagshead below Lower hide near the road, a male Pied Flycatcher and a Spotted Flycatcher. (MK). A Cuckoo singing in the Eastbach area, from mid-morning onwards, heard from Forge Hill, – first cuckoo heard from this location in several years.

Awre     Two WHISKERED TERNS flying N at 9am with two BLACK TERNS and two ARCTIC TERNS. Earlier a first-year LITTLE GULL. (John & Viv Phillips).

Frampton     From Splatt Bridge this morning a Marsh Harrier and a Grasshopper Warbler. (Jeremy Squire). This evening on the flashes four Black-tailed Godwits, four Whimbrels, two Little Egrets and a Cetti’s Warbler. (MK). At 8:30pm tonight on the Sailing Lake three BLACK TERNS and two Common Terns also a Whitethroat in the bushes in the lane at the end of Vicarage Lane. (Bill Church).

Frampton     Early morning on the Sailing Lake two Common Terns. From the towpath at Splatt Bridge ten Oystercatchers, five flew towards the pools, 12 Grey Plovers flew N led by a summer-plumaged adult, 12 Whimbrels flew N, two Bar-tailed Godwits, three Little Egrets and a Short-eared Owl. Bourton-on-the-Water     A Cetti’s Warbler singing between the South Pit and the River Windrush. The Cuckoo still present and moving around the various pits. (Andy Lewis).

Earlier today a male Redstart, a Tree Pipit, a Willow Warbler, a Kestrel, three Buzzards, a Cuckoo, three Yellowhammers, Linnets, two pairs of Stonechats, Meadow Pipits and Skylarks. Also a Roebuck, an Adder, Seven spot Ladybirds, Peacock, Large Whites, Small Whites, Brimstones and an Orange Tip. (Chris & Phil Andrews). Tirley Sandpits     Today nine Blackcaps, a Lesser Whitethroat, 10 +Whitethroats, four Chiffchaffs, 7+ Skylarks, eight Swallows, four House Martins, a Green Woodpecker, a male Wheatear, a Raven, two Great Spotted Woodpeckers, three Stock Doves, a female Sparrowhawk and a Cuckoo. (Mark Grieve).

Sightings Wednesday 4th May 2016

Coombe Hill Meadows    Two WOOD SANDPIPERS from the Grundon Hide early morning then flew off N at 7:10am. (Chris Stott).

Guscar Rocks     Two Bar-tailed Godwits, 23 Whimbrels, 11 Dunlins, five Ringed Plover and a Wheatear. (Lewis Thomson).

Frampton     On the Sailing Lake this morning an ARCTIC TERN and three Common Terns. (Nick Goatman). A MARSH HARRIER from Splatt Bridge still and three Hobbies on Court Lake this morning. (Mark Dowie). A male Mandarin on court Lake. (Henry Kirkwood). This evening on the flashes N of Splatt Bridge a Short-eared Owl hunting, also six Whimbrels, three Curlews, two Ruff, a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Black-tailed Godwit and two Little Egrets. Cleeve Hill    Three RING OUZELS, a male Whinchat, a female Redstart, a female Wheatear, a female Stonechat, four Tree Pipits, 7+ Willow Warblers, a Cuckoo and a Red Kite. (Terry Grant). Apparently also seen last Thursday. (Sue Marshall).

Highnam Woods      Two Nightingales heard and one seen, also two pairs of Blackcaps, a Marsh Tit and a Great Spotted Woodpecker. Also a male Muntjac. (Geoff Fawcett/Ben Locke/Warren Gill).

Forest of Dean    At Nagshead a Spotted Flycatcher and a male and female Pied Flycatcher but generally quiet. Four Swifts very high over Coleford town centre today. (Geoff Fawcett). 14 Rook nests in the rookery at Lydney railway station and a further 12 nests in a rookery  200 yards north where the B4231 crosses the preserved railway branch. (Ivan Proctor).

Maisemore     A Common Crane flying down the River Severn towards Maisemore at 8pm. (Martin Greenish).

Sandhurst     Male and female Redstarts this evening. (Martin Greenish).

Haw Bridge     Between the bridge and Deerhurst Parish Drain outfall at least one Curlew bubbling, five Sand Martins, at least two singing Redstarts in tall oaks, a Sedge Warbler and at least two Lesser Whitethroats. (Mike Smart).

Cobney Meadows     Three immature Mute Swans, five Canada Geese, a Coot, a distant Curlew bubbling, at least two singing Redstarts and 2+ Lesser Whitethroats. (Mike Smart).
